1. Material Selection and Pretreatment
Knurled copper is typically made from brass materials such as H59 and H62 due to their excellent ductility (elongation ≥ 20%) and mechanical strength (tensile strength ≥ 400 MPa). Annealing (600-700°C) is required before processing to eliminate internal stress and improve the accuracy of subsequent knurling.
2. CNC Precision Turning
Rough machining of the copper rod is performed using a high-precision CNC lathe, ensuring an external dimensional tolerance within ±0.05mm. Diamond-coated blades (cutting speeds of 80-120 m/min) are typically used to reduce copper chips from sticking to the tool and ensure a smooth surface finish (Ra ≤ 1.6 μm).
3. Knurling Process
Knurling is a key step and is generally classified into three types: straight, crosshatch, and diagonal. A hydraulic or mechanical knurling wheel (hardness HRC 60 or higher) is used to press a uniform pattern onto the copper surface. The pressure must be precisely controlled (usually 3-5 tons) to prevent cracking or uneven depth of the pattern.
4. Surface Treatment
Electroplating: Nickel or chromium plating (film thickness 5-10 μm) is used to enhance wear resistance and oxidation resistance.
Passivation: A chemical passivation process forms a protective film to prevent oxidation and darkening of the copper surface.
Brushing/Polishing: Some high-end products require additional brushing or mirror polishing to enhance the appearance and quality.
